Hunting Hill Pinot Noir

$50.00

In 1994 we established new plantings of Pinot Noir on our Kumeu Estate with the aim of producing red wine to rival the quality of our Kumeu River Chardonnay. To this end only the best new planting material available from Burgundy was chosen, and grafted onto extremely low-vigour rootstocks to limit the yield and intensify the flavour of this wonderfully aristocratic grape variety.

This is the sixth release of Hunting Hill Pinot Noir with no 2016 or 2018 being made. The 2020 vintage was excellent for Pinot Noir on Hunting Hill with everything harvested in perfect conditions. There is a beautiful purity of ripe cherry fruit on the nose with a hint of gaminess. The palate is texturally supple but carrying enough tannin to let this wine take on some nice bottle age.

Kumeu River Hunting Hill Pinot Noir

Light ruby-red colour with some depth and slight garnet hues, lighter on the rim. This has a softly concentrated and full nose with aromas of dark-red cherry and berry fruit with a subtle note of nutty oak and suggestions of dark herbs. The aromatics form a rounded and deep heart, growing in firmness and intensity with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a fine core of dark-red cherry and berry fruit with soft notes of nutty oak along with dark herb detail. The fruit has richness, underlined by supple tannin extraction lending a soft, balanced structure with integrated acidity. The wine carries smoothly to a long finish of cherry fruit and nutty oak. This Pinot Noir has cherry, berry, dark herb and nutty flavours with gentle richness and supple tannins. Match with poultry and pork dishes over the next 4+ years. - Raymond Chan
