Hunting Hill Chardonnay 2020 - Library Release
Hunting Hill is a vineyard that was first planted in 1982 and became a significant part of the original Kumeu River Chardonnay blend. Occupying the slope overlooking Maté’s Vineyard, it has always contributed lovely ripe and rich fruit to the Estate Chardonnay. Hunting Hill was replanted in 2000 and is now even better than before, giving beautifully ripe fruit with a distinctive, mealy minerality.
Winemaker's Notes
2020 was a star vintage in Kumeu, and quite possibly the finest Hunting Hill we have made. A long, even summer gave fully ripe fruit with the acidity intact, and the wine was poised from the moment it went to barrel. Six years on it shows toast, meal, hazelnut and spice over citrus, with a seam of peachy richness running beneath linear lemon fruit and the oak sitting well back where it belongs. Powerful, but entirely composed, and with a long life still ahead of it.
